Are you ready to tunnel through the web without exposing your online activities? TunnelBear has you covered!

TunnelBear is popularly known for its attractive interface and ease of use. But the service has a lot more to offer.

With security features like AES 256-Bits encryption, a kill switch, audit reports, and no logs policy, TunnelBear can quickly become your anonymous surfing friend. However, the affordable VPN has gaming, torrenting, and streaming limits.

The following guide covers TunnelBear’s essential features, premium plans, and some pros & cons.

TunnelBear’s Pricing Plans

TunnelBear offers cost-effective plans to users. It also offers a limited free plan for users who want to test the waters before a long-term commitment.

Its three payment plans (as of 1st August 2023) are:

1. Free: This plan is restricted to 2GB of browsing data for free. It’s an excellent way to test TunnelBear with no strings attached.

2. Unlimited: TunnelBear’s premium version includes unlimited simultaneous devices and data bandwidths. It also offers priority customer support and VPN services. You can choose to pay monthly, annually, or every 3 years.

  • The 1-month plan costs $9.99/ month.
  • The 1 Year plan costs $4.99/ month after a 50% discount. You will be billed $59.88 annually.
  • The 3 Year plan costs $3.33/ month after a 67% discount, billed $120 upfront.

3. Teams: The Teams plan costs $5.75 per month for one user. This solution is ideal for large teams and businesses that require VPN services across all devices. You can avail a free 7 days trial before committing to this plan.

Unfortunately, TunnelBear has no money-back policy or official free trial. Each refund request is analysed individually at the discretion of a customer support agent. Furthermore, the only payment method accepted is credit cards.

Using TunnelBear

TunnelBear is compatible with macOS, Windows, Android and iOS. It also has dedicated browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. However, the interface is cluttered with graphics and animations. These graphics are heavy on your devices and distract users from the VPN’s essential functions.

TunnelBear for Streaming & Torrenting

TunnelBear is not the best choice for unblocking streaming sites, especially Netflix. Unfortunately, TunnelBear’s features aren’t advanced enough to bypass Disney+ and Netflix security measures. However, the VPN has no issues connecting to HBO Max, Amazon Prime or BBC iPlayer.

The VPN isn’t compatible with Smart TVs, Amazon Firestick or routers.

TunnelBear doesn’t support torrents and P2P sharing either. Due to strict privacy laws in Canada, TunnelBear allows you to download only ‘legal’ torrents. But this service fails, and P2P file sharing and torrenting downloads usually begin only once the VPN is disconnected.

TunnelBear will help a great deal to bypass the Great Firewall of China. Its GhostBear feature conceals VPN traffic as regular internet traffic. This technology is called Obfsproxy. It’s also one of the few VPNs with servers in Hong Kong.

TunnelBear is an OK choice for gaming. We don’t recommend subscribing to premium features because of its slow server speeds. If you’re a hardcore gamer, this means ping issues, extreme lags and a not-so-fun gaming experience.

Features of TunnelBear

Here are some features that set TunnelBear apart:

Security Audits

TunnelBear is the first VPN service to publish an audit report through an independent third party. It’s the only VPN that performs yearly audits and publishes the results for everyone. They also immediately patch up any identified issues during these audits to display how seriously they take user security.

No Logs Policy

TunnelBear doesn’t keep the data of your online activities like IP addresses and websites. It only stores user information, including your email address, Twitter ID, OS version, cardholder name and data consumption. Overall, TunnelBear offers superior anonymity despite being based in a 5-Eyes Country.

VigilantBear is TunnelBear’s built-in kill switch. It secures your data from accidental leaks by shutting down the internet whenever the VPN connection is lost. It puts your connection on hold if the VPN server is unresponsive. But this feature is only available on macOS, Windows and Android. Further, it doesn’t notify users of disconnections.

SplitBear is TunnelBear’s take on split-tunnelling. You can select which apps and websites pass through the VPN connection and which are routed through your regular connection. This reduces data consumption and the risk of blacklisting on platforms like online banking.

Customer Support

TunnelBear doesn’t offer live chat support. Instead, users must get in line to get an email ticket to connect with the representative. The average response time is under 3 hours. However, you can find a plethora of information on their knowledge base. Their dedicated “Help” section contains  Announcements, Accounts, troubleshooting guides, FAQs and other valuable information to help you tackle known issues.

TunnelBear Review: Final Words

TunnelBear makes virtual tunnels via network pathways to offer safe and secure online browsing. In addition to internet traffic encryption, TunnelBear can also protect you against hacking attempts.

You can avail 2GB of data for free without any long-term commitment. One obvious downside of TunnelBear is its inability to stream content on Netflix and its torrenting restrictions. That said, if you are looking for a standard security measure for your connection, TunnelBear is an excellent option.
